Scaffolding In Derby During A Heatwave
In one of our recent blogs, we touched on how working in Scaffolding in Derby during the summer differentiates from the winter and more temperature months. With the UK forecast to see heatwave after heatwave, we thought it would be beneficial to revisit the intricacies of working on and/or scaffold erecting in Derby during a heatwave.
While Derby does not see much sunshine, when heatwaves hit, it can be problematic. Especially when you can consider that many UK households are not built to withstand heat.
So, let’s touch on some of the ways you can mitigate the effects of a heatwave and ensure the safety, comfort and overall integrity of all involved in the practise of scaffold erecting.
Watch Out For Metal
As you might have guessed, when the sun beats down on metal, it can significantly warm up and even be rather unpleasant to touch. As such, you might want to consider sparsely touching it or wearing appropriate and protective clothing.
When working on or when erecting scaffolding, you will be required to at some points touch and work with metal. So not touching the metal is nearly completely off the table. Not to worry however, there are a couple of techniques you can implement so you do not feel or experience any form of discomfort.
As previously mentioned, you could wear certain protective gloves. Additionally, you could also place the metal strategically in the shade ensuring it does not get too hot. Whether that be leaving the metal not in use in the shade or trying to assemble metal in the shade before fully erecting.
Drink Plenty of Water
Dehydration is one of the leading causes heatstroke and other heat related illnesses. As such, you will want to ensure you remain hydrated. Not only should you ensure you are taking relatively frequently breaks for water but you should ensure you are consuming the correct kinds of liquids.
You should not be consuming alcohol or high caffeine containing drinks. While drinks such as diet sofa drinks and iced tea can be beneficial, a simple glass of cool water is always the safest and most effective option.
Ensure Proper Sun Protection Is Upheld
During a heatwave, the sun can be significantly stronger and therefore UV rays can be a lot harsher. This means you require a lot less time in the sun for it to become damaging. This means not only should you seek shade where possible but you should also wear appropriate sun protection.
It is advised that you should wear as higher factor as possible especially when the sun is at its strongest.
